LOOKING INSIDE INTEGRITY BREAKDOWNS

In my role as therapist and consultant, I have had the opportunity to look inside the wreckage of many relationship disasters. What I often find are breakdowns of integrity. Usually the problem can be traced to a moment when someone did not tell the truth or keep a specific agreement. Many people tell me that they withheld the truth because they felt that telling the truth would break a sense of trust they enjoyed. What they do not realize is that the act of withholding the truth is what breaks the trust. Withholding destroys trust, and to get the trust back again usually requires the courageous act of acknowledging the withheld truth or broken agreement. This path is definitely “the road less traveled.”

A CONSCIOUS LIVING PRACTICE FOR TODAY – MAY 7

Make it a top-priority goal today to communicate a withheld truth. First, make a commitment to doing it in a safe and effective way. Then, think of an appreciation you haven’t told someone, or perhaps a regret or resentment. Make a point of telling the relevant person today, preferably via oral communication.
