BE CREATIVE

I passed a man sweeping the sidewalks in a business district recently. The man was wearing the uniform of a maintenance worker, but he had on a T-shirt that said “Be Creative” on the front and “No Matter What You’re Doing” on the back. It gave pause for thought.

What if you invested every action you take with lovingness and creativity? What if sweeping sidewalks, repairing burst water heaters, reading to a child, cooking a meal, writing a report for work, and even sleeping were conscious actions filled from the well of your creativity?

This is how I try to live, and it has introduced a remarkable level of comfort and excitement and magic to my life. I encourage you to make the same commitment, to decide today that it is not enough to simply live; instead, you are going to live large, live exuberantly, live creatively, investing the smallest of your actions with the richness of your creativity.

How to start? I’ll begin with just a few simple suggestions.

  • Dress creatively and comfortably, in “eye easy,” body-affirming clothing.
  • Be conscious of your breathing throughout the day; make sure that you are breathing deeply, from your diaphragm, the core of your creative self.
  • Be conscious: as you begin any action, ask yourself how you can invest it with your own style and creativity. Perhaps this means singing as you cook, or perhaps it means a refraining, reminding yourself that cooking does not have to be a chore, it can be a gift of your love and yourself.

A CONSCIOUS LIVING PRACTICE FOR TODAY – NOVEMBER 2

Identify one activity that is repetitive and boring in your life, such as preparing daily meals, cleaning up after your family, driving a carpool, or sitting through meetings at work. Open your mind and your creative self: as is so often said now in business, “think out of the box” for a moment. What one simple change can you make to invest this routine and repetitive activity with creativity? Be aware of how your experience changes once you layer creativity on this activity or behavior.
