A CONSCIOUS LIVING PRACTICE FOR TODAY – NOVEMBER 4
The giving of love is an education in itself.
– Eleanor Roosevelt
CREATING A WORLD-VIEW
You have two great tasks in your life: to live in peace within yourself and to live in harmony with the people around you. If you do not find peace within yourself, nothing you accomplish will feel satisfying. You can blanket yourself with the finest of material belongings, surround yourself with perfect children and trophy partners, be at the top of your profession…and it will be of no import whatsoever. Similarly, if you do not connect and live in harmony with others, you miss the very essence of life: affiliation, connectedness, the giving and receiving of love.
Once you are in harmony internally and externally, you can join together into an ecological action—a balance with the world around you, relational and physical—that springs upward from a center of wholeness. Only then, I believe, will we preserve the harmony of the earth and keep it well for our children.
What exists inside of you is inextricably linked, like a deep root system, to the well-being of the planet. You cannot save the integrity of the planet on which you live if you cannot even save yourself.
A CONSCIOUS LIVING PRACTICE FOR TODAY – NOVEMBER 4
Spend fifteen or twenty minutes outside today, weather permitting, or, if not, plant yourself comfortably in front of a window. Look around and take in the majestic, incredible harmony of the earth: animals living in a system of balance, trees and grass and flowers and plants rising up out of the richness of the earth, the sweet air filled with life-supporting oxygen, the sky stretching out for miles. Feel your tininess first: feel how small you are in the greater system of life. It is humbling and affirming to see yourself as a small part of such an unimaginably large system of life. And now feel your largeness: feel the space you occupy, the breaths you take, the way that your body feels as it is anchored to this one spot of earth. Feel the connectedness between you and your world, our world. Know that every breath, every action, has some lasting effect on our world. Tread gently.
